THIS WEEK

Neil Nicoll, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Seattle, will discuss the emerging epidemic in children’s and adults’ diseases because of inactivity and obesity. Bring a guest to Friday’s meeting, 7:00 a.m., Glendale Country Club.

ADMIN CORNER

Billing is in your hands. This is an important quarter for Rotary — the Fourth and final quarter of the current Rotary Year. This is also the last quarter for Treasurer Burnett to balance the books. This is difficult if you have a classification such as Exotic Taxation. Help her by paying promptly. It is also critical that members who have a Paul Harris pledge pay promptly, so those monies can be forwarded to RI prior to June 30. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

The Friday Program:
United Way & the Business Community
Partners in Community Impact

x0411Fine1The President and CEO of United Way of King County, Jon Fine, brought members up to date about the role the organization plays in the lives of King County residents. Mr. Fine has overseen a program that has raised $465 million over the past five years, making it one of the most successful in the nation.

A graduate of Dartmouth, Fine previously worked for the Red Cross and Puget Sound Bank. He is and has been an active member of several local boards, such as the Board of Alliance for Education, and the Puget Sound Blood Center.

Fine announced two important initiatives of United Way that will have an impact on all citizens. “Over these many years, United Way has done great things for our community. In assessing our role in solving major issues, our organization has determined to tackle two important priorities: 1) To end homelessness in King County; and 2) Get kids ready for success by focusing on them completing school on time.”

“Every day, there are 8000 homeless people on the streets of our communities. An alarming number of our young students drop out of school altogether. These two issues have become priorities and major initiatives of United Way.”

Fine noted that the strategic planning process is meant to “make a case for change. Our existing structure isn’t solving problems like it should. Critical needs persist. There’s a call for more accountability by agencies involved. We live in the most generous community in the nation, where per capita giving resulted in a record $93 million last year.” READ MORE

A maximum of 15 people are needed for the project, with the WDOT providing all of the supplies, including vests, hard hats, signs, bags and lattes. Or was it margaritas?

Painting Party Set

Steve Luplow, mouthpiece for the Community Service committee announces the annual spring painting party will take place at one of the BBRC’s favorite organizations, the Eastside Adult Day Services in Bellevue. Wear your paint clothes and be at EADS on Saturday, April 23, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Contact Luplow for more details or sign-up on the form provided at your table on Friday.

Thought for the week

“Always use your mind and plan deep before doing an action. It is not cowardly to retreat in battle. Stay focused on a step backward to have ten steps forward.” — Author Unknow
