ADMIN CORNER

We’ve turned the corner on the final quarter of the current Rotary Year. Fourth Quarter billing will be mailed Monday, April 4. A reminder to all new Rotarians and those who may want an upgrade on their directory photo: Larry Gill will set up his portrait studio on Friday, April 22 to take color photos for inclusion in the BBRC Directory. Among the candidates for a shoot include Aragon, Erickson, Giner and Kelly Nolan, plus any new members who will have joined by that time. Mark your calendars.

Scholarship Recipient Gives Update

x0328SantiagoOne year ago, Sergio Santiago was a senior at Sammamish High School. Four years before that, when Sergio was 13 years old, he had just arrived in this country from Mexico. Here’s what he said last year:

“I will tell you about my first day ... and my last day. On my first day, it was most difficult. I had to ask each of my teachers to help me, since I did not speak English. For the first two weeks, I would go home in tears and tell my mother I wanted to go back to Mexico. ‘You are not going back, so quit crying,’ she would say. But, as hard as those days were, the last day was one of the hardest. Saying goodbye to all my friends. Even the kindergarten class I help out in didn’t want me to leave! It was very emotional for me, as it is telling you about it.” Sergio, who thanked the club for its generosity, plans to enroll at Central Washington University in the fall and study to become a teacher — a kindergarten teacher!

Sergio became the largest scholarship recipient in BBRC history and revisited the club Friday to tell of his first year away from home at Ellensburg. He was introduced by Fred Cogswell, who praised the young man for his accomplishments. He has a 3.0 grade point average for his first college semester and looks to improve on that during the current semester.

Friday, he said, “I’m here so you know where your money is going! The first semester was tough, but I’m catching on. It will be challenging. I will work hard and make you all happy. I still want to be an elementary school teacher.”

Thanks to Nick Paget for his introduction of BBRC Scholarships in Action!
