ADMIN CORNER

We’ve turned the corner on the final quarter of the current Rotary Year. Fourth Quarter billing will be mailed Monday, April 4. A reminder to all new Rotarians and those who may want an upgrade on their directory photo: Larry Gill will set up his portrait studio on Friday, April 22 to take color photos for inclusion in the BBRC Directory. Among the candidates for a shoot include Aragon, Erickson, Giner and Kelly Nolan, plus any new members who will have joined by that time. Mark your calendars.

The Friday Program:
A Return to the Village of Xeucalvitz

x0328Agros1On February 18, 2005, BBRC members Steve Lingenbrink and Curtis Cummings, along with their daughters Sarah Lingenbrink (10) and Ciara Cummings (8), headed off with a team of eight others to the village of Xeucalvitz, Guatemala. Xeucalvitz is in the high country of northern Guatemala in the Ixil Triangle, more than 10-hour drive north of the airport they flew into in Guatemala City. The Team was organized by Mike and Kelly Yukevich of Agros International. The purpose of the trip was three-fold:

(1) To revisit the village that Steve and Terri Lingenbrink had become the “champions” of in 2003 to raise the funds necessary to purchase land and rebuild the entire village.

(2) To complete a road up to the village.

(3) To plan for the future water project and education project components of the Village.

During their trip they spent two days getting to the village, six days in the village and then a few additional days in Guatemala “decompressing” before returning. The trip was a success. This was the first group that had ever stayed overnight in the village. During their stay the villagers and the team gradually grew close and began interacting both at a work and recreational level. The girls taught the children hand games, jump rope, games like “duck-duck-goose” and basic English words. They also worked side by side with their dads and the villagers on the road project. District Conference Seeks Attendees

Rotarians who attend extraordinary meetings such as District Conferences or International Conventions will tell you that’s where you learn about the power of Rotary. And, the annual opportunity awaits BBRC members in Vancouver, BC, as the District 5030 Conference takes place.

Brian Evison, liaison for registrations, said that nine members have made plans to attend. “If you want to expand your horizons about Rotary, here is a three-day conference at your doorstep that will make you a better Rotarian.” Contact Brian for registration information for the conference, April 29 through May 1.

We Get Emails

Colly Radford has returned from his annual pilgrimage to the Islands. He tells us he made up at three morning Maui clubs on this trip: Kihei Sunrise, Wailuku and Upcountry Maui. The Upcountry club won an award as the best small club in District 5000, which won the award as the best US District. “We definitely need to keep our focus to be the Best Darn Rotary Club in the World,” Colly says. “BBRC may not have 100% Paul Harris Fellows or views of whales leaping out of the ocean to compete with great speakers, but we definitely have the great positive energy that accomplishes meaningful goals and objectives for our community and keeps the fun in Rotary. There’s no place like the BBRC!”

We Get Thanks

Dear BBRC Friends,

Thank you so much for the pretty mixed flower arrangement that helped brighten Kim’s hospital room. He enjoyed the large card, signed by so many. Kim appreciated the visits and calls, too.

We are very thankful that his surgery went very well and the cancer did not spread outside the prostate. Kim is resting and working at increasing his energy. He commented about missing Rotary this morning, so I know he’ll look forward to returning as soon as he’s ready.

Fondly, Jean and Kim

Dear Mr. Paget and BBRC Members,

Thank you very much for sponsoring me for the RYLA seminar. It was really fun and I learned many valuable ideas for leadership that I can now use at my own school to make positive changes.

At the seminar, there were awesome speakers. Many of them shared their life stories to give us insight to what we might achieve. Again, thank you for your generosity. I had a great experience.
