The Friday Program:
Preventing Falls in the Home —
a Primer for Seniors

Hardin1Randy Hardin, owner of Abiding Home Care in Bremerton, was introduced as a former military career person who has applied for membership to the Poulsbo Rotary Club. He was accompanied by Jim Black, a Bellevue Rotarian, who represents the same company in the Bellevue area.

The topic of the morning was Fall Prevention. Randy said the At Home Care system provides services to senior citizens, allowing them to stay in their home as long as possible. “When seniors fall, the consequences are serious. Their loss of independence is their number of one fear.”

Hardin said his program is “keeping seniors on their feet.” He shared some statistics which bear out the severity of accidents:

  • 70% of accidental deaths in people over 75 result from falls
  • $70 billion is spent attending to those who are injured in falls
  • 70% of admissions to nursing homes come after falls
  • one in three seniors who live sindependently will suffer a major fall
  • 25% of hip fractures results in death within a year

“The bottom line is that fear of falling leads to a loss of confidence, a self-imposed isolation and immobility. It doesn’t have to be that way.” READ MORE

ROTMPeterson Picks up ROTARIAN OF THE MONTH Plaque

Terry Peterson and his accounting crew worked themselves to a frazzle from August to November, keeping an eye on all of the transactions of the BBRC Raffle. It was so frazzling that Terry surfaced only this past week to accept the accolades of the club, receiving the Rotarian of the Month award for November.

Annual Valentine Dinners

MoloneyBob Moloney whipped up fervor for attendance at the annual Valentine’s Dinners being held on Saturday, February 12th, in the homes of various members.

“You’ve got to sign up for this event so we can place you either as a host or a guest and in a home of a member  all of this remains a secret until the week before the event.

Bob will be happy to answer all questions. “You may even be one of the group meeting that night on Whidbey Island!”

The Valentine Dine Around has become a standard event for the month of February and Bob"Sweetheart"Moloney has been the organizer for over ten years. It’s a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians and spouses better. You’ll have a great evening of fun and fellowship, not to mention a wonderful meal. Sign up with Bob at your earliest convenience!

Tsunami Relief tops $12,500!

With an additional $3,050 collected Friday morning, the BBRC’s effort to help in the relief of Tsunami victims rose to a generous $12,525, according to Kim Shrader, Chair of the World Community Service Committee. Kim, along with Treasurer Margie Burnett, conducted the effort over the past two Fridays.

The WCS Committee added to the total with $4,000 of budgeted funds. This means that individual members contributed $8,485 toward this worthy cause. Shrader and his committee thank the membership for once again demonstrating the generosity of the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club.

The account will remin open for another week or two, in case you didn’t get the opportunity to contribute or if you might want to contribute again. Send a check of any amount made out to the “BBRC Foundation” and mail it to PO Box 3003, Bellevue WA 98009-3003, or bring it this week to our regular meeting.

Retention Team on the Prowl

OwensBrownJim Owens, Membership Retention Committee Chair, took his message to the choir, giving the pitch that “attendance is one of the major hallmarks of a good Rotarian. RI requires 60% or better attendance and our committee operates to encourage all members to do so.”

Dick Brown was called upon for a Testimonial: “Twenty years of commitment to Rotary and the BBRC has made me a better person. My life has been enhanced and fulfilled because of the fellowship I share with 113 of my best friends. Remember the ABC’s of Rotary: A is for Attend, B is for Bond, and C is for Commitment. If we all do that, we’ll be better for it.”

Thought for the week
