Music, Math & Money The Three Muses of Harmony & Peace

Spady1Dick Spady, our 81-year-old Rotarian friend from Bellevue Overlake and an icon in the business and professional world, paid the BBRC a visit Friday with a message of success on the occasion of Dick’s Drive-In’s 50th Anniversary.

Introduced by PDG Dick Clarke (who opened by saying, “I approve of this message!”) who asked the audience to raise their hands if they were born after 1949. More than half the hands in the room went up, to which Dick responded, “Well, Mr. Spady, this sure ain’t Seattle #4!”

Clarke got carried away introducing the speaker, saying that the two Dicks had something in common: “Our Oregon roots ... both of us graduating from Oregon State.” Spady served in World War II in the Seabees, was called back in for duty in the Korean War, and then served 29 years in the Air Force Reserve. Spady was trying to decide what to do with his life after the military and, having had experience with food service in the Air Force, decided to go into the restaurant business. He was having lunch with friends at the Carnival in Portland when he saw the large stack of hamburger patties waiting to be cooked. He asked the operators how many they served a day and they said they had three other stacks in the cooler! This amazed Dick and he resolved to find out more about this fast-food business. Thus, in 1953, after moving to Seattle, the idea of Dick’s Drive-In was born, and the first restaurant opened at 45th in Wallingford on January 28, 1954. It is now the oldest fast-food restaurant chain in Oregon and Washington (and probably Idaho!). READ MORE

Some Notes About St. Patrick
by Chip Erickson

EricksonPatrick isn't really a Saint with a capital S, having never been officially canonized by Rome. And Patrick couldn't have driven the snakes out of Ireland because there were never any snakes there to begin with.

He wasn't even the first evangelist to Ireland (Palladius had been sent in 431, about five years before Patrick went). Patrick wasn't even Irish. He's from what's now Dumbarton, Scotland (just northwest of Glasgow).

Patrick was 16 years old in about the year 405, when he was captured in a raid and became a slave in what was still radically pagan Ireland. Far from home, he clung to the religion he had ignored as a teenager. Even though his grandfather had been a priest, and his father a town councilor, Patrick "knew not the true God." But forced to tend his master's sheep in Ireland, he spent his six years of bondage mainly in prayer. He escaped at the suggestion of a dream and returned home.

Patrick was in his mid-40s when he returned to Ireland. Palladius had not been very successful in his mission, and the returning former slave replaced him. Intimately familiar with the Irish clan system (his former master, Milchu, had been a chieftain), Patrick's strategy was to convert chiefs first, who would then convert their clans through their influence. Reportedly, Milchu was one of his earliest converts.

saintpathatThough he was not solely responsible for converting the island, Patrick was quite successful. He made missionary journeys all over Ireland, and it soon became known as one of Europe's Christian centers. This, of course, was very important to fifth-century Christians, for whom Ireland was one of the "ends of the earth."

Here is a prayer attributed to St. Patrick:

I arise today Through God's strength to pilot me;
God's might to uphold me, God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me, God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me, God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me, God's shield to protect me.

Club Service I Mini-Assembly

Powell1EinsteinClub Service I keeps an eye on administrative activities of the club, as explained by Director Will Einstein. “I look at Club Service I as the backbone of the Club, based on the components which we oversee. Programs, Fellowship, Public Relations and Information Services are the four committees operating in Club I.” Steve Goldfarb chairs Programs; Peter Powell, Fellowship; Bill Schultheis, Public Relations; and John Mix, Information Services.

Peter took the occasion to promote the first-ever Wine & Cheese Social held Friday night at President Brian’s offices. “We’re party animals and work hard to provide social functions for the membership,” said Peter (see evidence of such below).

Thought for the Week

For a community to be whole and healthy, it must be based on people’s love and concern for each other.
