White Collar Espionage

A discussion about how to control white collar crime in the business environment was led by Steve Roberts, CPA and Certified Fraud Examiner, along with his side-kick, John Patterson, CPA. Both have extensive experience in forensic accounting or the examination for fraud.

Since the 1980’s, investigative accountants have played a major role in uncovering an area known as “managed earnings cases and theft,” which have been identified by an “opportunity to book entries and move earnings around,” allowing persons perpetrating the fraud to make off with large sums of money.

Patterson cautioned business owners to “be aware of the surroundings. Look at invoices, stamp them ‘paid.’ We know that business owners hate accounting, but the fact is that bookkeepers have the incentive to commit fraud—it’s a fact of business life.”

To help solve this drain on business operations, owners are urged to “bring charges against those committing fraud. It’s important to get a record of the crime, so they are deterred from going down the street and doing it all over again. Background checks are essential, including references.”

The two presenters were given certificates noting that the BBRC has delivered a book to a needy young person on the Eastside to further Rotary’s commitment to fight illiteracy.
