Friday Potpourri

Chandler, Perine
Greeters Don Chandler (L) & Ken Perine

After a cafeteria breakfast in the meal room at Sammamish High School, the 75 members who attended the Off-Site meeting at SHS adjourned to the theater for Friday’s program. President Shrader opened the meeting, introducing Ken Perine, who delivered the invocation and led the pledge to the flag, while Don Chandler greeted three visiting Rotarians and several guests of Rotarians.

Jenny Andrews, Club Service II Director and in charge of membership recruiting, saluted about a half-dozen members who have brought guests to meetings in search of special new people who want to join the finest service club in the world. “Thanks to your efforts, our membership pipeline is full and we encourage you to keep bringing friends and business acquaintances with an eye to joining the BBRC.”

Martinka, Cogswell
John Martinka, involving Evelyn Cogswell in his evil schemes.

To the usual chorus of boos, John Martinka said that he’d have to be quick, since the program was so full. He noted that Jim Owens was celebrating his birthday on Friday, and the crowd responded with a “Happy Birthday, Jim!”

Appropriately, Evelyn Cogswell, former principal at Sammamish High, initiated the famous Sergeant’s Game, “To Tell the Truth.” Evelyn’s job was to relate four things about her life, but one would be false. It was up to the club members to figure out which one was false.

Evelyn said that:

    1) she had 10 grandchildren

    2) she was an accomplished scuba diver

    3) she was a good student in high school and college and was elected to highest leadership positions: and

    4) she is a collector of fine art.

Seems that #1, #2 and #4 were true. Evelyn wasn’t elected to those high leadership positions in high school and college. It was a highly profitable morning, with $38 collected, which meant that 38 members guessed wrong!
