Used Eye Glasses Wrapped in a $5.00 Bill
Under the sponsorship of Past District Governor Duane Ruud and the Redmond Rotary Club, a District 5030 project is underway to gather up used eyeglasses, and wrap ‘em in a $5.00 bill supporting Rotary’s Avoidable Blindness project. The glasses will go to a District in India, and the dollars will go to match funds from the Rotary Foundation, our District, and the District in India for the purchase of a Carl Zeiss Fundus Camera. Total cost of the project is $52, 568.
Past Rotary International President Frank Devlyn has been assigned as the RI President’s Representative to the District Conference the end of April in Victoria. He is also chairperson of RI’s Avoidable Blindness Task Force. The goal is to collect as many glasses as possible, accompanied by a $5.00 bill, and present them at the District Conference.
This is a short-term project, with a completion date of April 14, 2003. The sponsors suggest Rotary members bring their used glasses and $5.00 bills to the next few Rotary meetings, where the glasses will be put in zip-lock bags, and one check will be written to cover the amount of money collected.
GOAL: To celebrate the success of this project at our District Conference.
The world has 45 million blind people – 15 million are in India. If we collect more money than is needed for the surgical instrument, the funds will be put toward providing cataract surgery in India at $25 per surgery, with the District in India matching our funding for each surgery. Contact Duane Ruud about supporting these grants (Ph 206-200-0796).
Dr. Rick McManus has agreed to chair this whirlwind effort to collect glasses and raise money. You’ll hear more about the project Friday and over the few weeks remaining. Do a quick inventory of your home – everybody’s got a pair of used glasses in storage somewhere! If you need more information, email Rick .
