Robbie Bach
Robbie Bach, Microsoft

Xbox Going Strong

Microsoft’s entry into the game arena has proved to be exciting and successful, says Robbie Bach, Senior Vice-President and CXO of Microsoft Games, the Chief developer of the Xbox. Robbie’s job has been to manage the entire Xbox effort. He is a veteran in software development, joining Microsoft in 1988.

“Microsoft is now focusing on empowering users through great software on an anytime-anyplace- and on-any-device basis,” Bach said. “This has made the Xbox and video games possible from Microsoft. This is a big shift from the fundamental way of doing business, in terms of focus and direction.” MORE

Update on Dale Hemphill
This is to let everyone know that Dale Hemphill is recovering from chemo for his relapse with cancer. Susan Harrison talked with him Friday morning, and despite a tender throat and upset stomach he is progressing. Your support will go along way to shoring up the soul. Please send a get well card to:

Valentine Dine Around
Sign-ups are just about complete for the annual Valentine Dine Around scheduled for Saturday, February 16. While Sharon Edberg made the pitch, Jenny Andrews gave a testimonial about the great time she and Tom had at last year’s event. Hosts and guests are currently enrolled, with room for more. Hosts, of course, will provide the site and the entrée, while guests will bring the other parts of the meal. Details are very clear on the sign-up sheet. Completed sheets are to be faxed to Bob Moloney at (425) 455-4168.

Bellevue Philharmonic Concert
Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a wonderful St. Valentine’s Day concert performed by the Bellevue Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by our favorite music director Fusao Kajima. The concert will be staged at Westminster Chapel in Bellevue on Thursday, February 14, at 8:00 p.m. The program includes such selections as “My Funny Valentine,” “The Man I Love,” “The Titanic Medley,” “Something Wonderful” from The King and I, and “O Mio Babbino Caro” from Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi. A special treat for concert goers at the Chapel at 7:15 will be a reading of love poems by Clifford Paul Fetters and Debra Dean, from classical times to the modern era. Tickets are $25 for adults, $18 for seniors.

Thanks From Hopelink
Hopelink thanks all the BBRC Rotarians who participated in the giving tree this year. We appreciate your taking time out of your busy holiday schedules to buy gifts for needy children you don’t even know. With your help, Hopelink’s Bellevue Center provided gifts to 477 families (1,220 children!). Special thanks go to Phil Salvatori, our super organized Santa, for coordinating this effort and to everyone who volunteered their time.

You created smiles of joy for many grateful families. – Shelley Noble

Thought for the Week
All the world’s a video game and all men and women are merely players.

THIS WEEK
On the eve of a mission trip to Perm, Russia, the BBRC’s World Community Service Committee prepares for this event with a program about the orphanages in Russia. Our guest this week is John Shane of New Hope, who will tell of his organization’s experiences in Russian orphanages. Breakfast begins this Friday at 7:00 a.m., with the meeting at 7:30, and program at 8:00. Don’t miss this revealing presentation.

ADMIN CORNER
For our new members, and especially for their sponsors, this may come a little late to explain what the elements are of that first billing you’ve received. First, you should know that the quarterly dues are $240, which covers all operations costs and meals. For newcomers, you’ll note an initiation fee of $125, which is a one-time charge, much of which is sent to Rotary International. Finally, if you came into the Club in mid-quarter, you will see a pro-rated figure that covers the meetings held in the quarter prior to your first billing. At this time, each meeting is billed at $18.46 (rounded off) times the number of meetings held after your induction. So, your bill could be as low as $365 or as high as $586, depending on when you came into the Club. Your sponsor should walk through this with you, but the Club Administrator or the Treasurer would be happy to sit down and discuss this with you. It is better to know this information prior to becoming a member, so use the resources available to thoroughly understand the BBRC’s billing system.

And, while we’re at it, this is the Year of the Palindrome. Anybody know what that means?
