THIS WEEK

Right on the heels of last week’s decision of the District Court in Wenatchee comes Nick Handy, Director of Elections for the State of Washington. Handy holds an important position in the Secretary of State’s office and not only testified at, but observed the two-week trial just concluded. "Washington’s Gubernatorial Election," is the topic with Handy giving insight as to the next step to re-assure Washington voters that the election system is sound. Bring a guest, a potential member to Glendale’s buffet Breakfast. Friday at 7:00 a.m.

The Norman Johnson Administration closes out with just two weeks to go in this Rotary Year. Officers and Directors are collecting information for their year-end reports and the Treasurer is bent on making the books balance. You can help by making your payments for any outstanding balances to the Cashier this week, or by mail to the club’s post office box: BBRC, PO Box 3003, Bellevue WA 98009-3003. Your assistance is appreciated.

Scholarships Awarded

x0613SmithPagetThe BBRC’s Youth Services Committee made annual scholarship awards to six students from Sammamish High School at Friday’s meeting. The awards were the results of an intensive interview process held over the past several weeks by committee members.

Nick Paget, committee Chair, reported that $14,100 in scholarships were awarded to the students, ranging from $1,000 to $2,600.

Tom Smith, a member of the committee, handled the introduction of the recipients and members of their families. Tom commented that each member of the BBRC contributed five hours per $1,000 of fundraising in order to make these awards come to pass.

Tom introduced Spencer Welch, principal of Sammamish High School, along with counselor Matt Stevens and Carole Chomik, who runs the school’s counseling center and coordinates closely with the BBRC throughout the year.

x0613StudentsThe six scholarship award winners were Derek Banak, Jenni Lui, Laura Ng, Megan Kelly, Daniel Blau and Melissa Arnold. Family members for each award winner were announced.

Tom posed a key question to the students: “How will this scholarship impact your life?” Each of them responded that the scholarship would enable them to fulfill their dreams and aspirations for continuing their education.

The students will be attending a range of institutions come fall, including Montana, Bellevue Community College, Wheaton College, Washington State University, University of Washington, and Western Washington University.

As the applause ended for the new scholarship winners, Chairman Paget praised the members of the Vocational Service Committee, with Carlene Buty as Director, who were able to free up unspent funds at year-end to help support the financial needs of these students.
