Friday Potpourri

x0509GreetersA beautiful spring morning got a rousing BBRC greeting from President Norm. He invited Ernie Hayden to give the invocation, who then led the pledge to the flag. Phil Salvatori greeted visiting Rotarians Frank Young and John Matheson, both of Bellevue. There were several guests of Rotarians who received a warm welcome.

President Norm gave a thumbnail on the District Conference held in Vancouver, BC, over the weekend. Jim Owens received a special Rotary Foundation award.

The President announced the retirement of Kevin Jewell as the Rotary First Harvest representative for the BBRC. Kevin has held the position for the past several years, attending RFH board meetings and coordinating various projects of RFH. Howard Johnson and Ruben Ladlad will co-chair the club’s RFH activities, with Ron Healey and David Bolson volunteering to serve on a new committee, forming officially July 1. It took at least four Rotarians to fill Kevin’s shoes! Thanks, Kevin, for good work on such an important project.

Jan Nestler, Queen of BBRC Projects and leader of the Eastside Adult Day Services, gave a quick recap of the work accomplished by a small, but dedicated band of Rotary Painters. Led by project chairman Steve Luplow, the group had the pleasure of brightening the EADS complex in Bellevue. Colors of bright yellow and orange dressed up activity rooms at the Center. Jan reported that when the staff showed up for work the next Monday, they were incredulous. The residents were more expressive, with words like “Wow!” and “Awesome!” heard freely. The paint crew included Luplow, Nestler, Norm Johnson, David Bolson, Harry Bolson, Sayoko Kuwahara, Michael O'Brien, Jim Kindsvater, and Lynne Gauthier.

The Monthly RFH Work Party will take place on Pier 91 in Seattle this Saturday morning, 9:00 to noon. As always, there’s work to be done, so many volunteer hands are welcome.
