The Friday Program:
Boeing Shores Up Its Ethics

x0509Carr1The BBRC’s Vocational Awareness Committee—the sponsor of annual ethics programs for the membership—introduced Ed Carr, Director of Ethics and Business Conduct at the Boeing Company, and a team of advisers who explained the topic Ethics Initiatives at Boeing.

“A series of unfortunate events over the past two years underscored Boeing’s integrity problems, hiring problems and ethical failures,” Carr said. He was speaking about the scandals surrounding the hiring of a former Air Force procurement officer who was involved in the Boeing-Air Force Tanker deal and the failure of the company’s CEO to follow his own set of ethical standards put in place only a few years ago.

“All of these events came into focus in the last two years,” Carr said. “I believe we have a really sound governance program in place today. Our job now is to share some of the lessons we’ve learned with the community and industry. The company’s thrust is on education and awareness, not teaching. We believe that ethics starts at home and at an early age. The values and culture of a company are the most important assets it has.”

Just 18 months ago, there were only three staff members assigned to company ethics. Today, that number has ballooned to 102, with 80 ethics advisers assigned to Boeing units around the world. The structure of the company organization has been revamped to strengthen the emphasis on providing awareness to the 160,000 employees of the company.

Jim Owens Receives RI Foundation Award

Tireless Jim Owens, past president of the BBRC and willing worker for any and all projects, was honored recently at the District Conference held in Vancouver, BC. For his work on last year’s Annual Giving Campaign, Jim received the prestigious RI Foundation Distinguished Service Award. His hard work led the District to first place among all U.S. Rotary Clubs and a third place finish in the world. Dick Clarke, fellow BBRC Past President and past District Governor, made the presentation in the absence of John Gardiner, PDG, who was unable to attend the Conference. Congratulations to Jim Owens, definitely a Rotarian’s Rotarian!

Committee Sign-ups

President-Elect Steve Lingenbrink chided the membership to get to the committee sign-up table and pick out the committee each member wishes to work on next year. The club leadership would like to see each member participating in a minimum of two committees. Select from a list of over 25 committees, but plan to sign up in the next week or so, as the roster will close around the first of June. Beginning July 1, members may be able to change their committee assignments and new members will be plugged into the roster during the course of the year. In other words, the Web Roster of Committees will be an active document with up-to-date listings of committees and memberships.

Summer Festival Set for Overlake School

SeattleChamberMusicSocThe Seattle Chamber Music Society is expanding to the Eastside with a series of concerts at Overlake School in Redmond. This is a project of the Seattle Chamber Music Society which runs August 3-12 at the Overlake School. There will be coaching sessions by members of the Chamber Music Society in this inaugural program.

This is the first year the Society has expanded to the Eastside location. Visiting musicians will be housed by home-stays. If any Rotarian has an interest in hosting, or attending any of the five concerts, they may call 206-283-8808, or visit the website at www.seattlechambermusic.org.

Thought for the week

Speaking of Ethics, the thought for the week, as selected by President Norm, is Rotary’s Four-Way Test.

The Four-Way Test, of the things we think, say or do. First, is it the TRUTH? Second, is it FAIR for all concerned? Third, will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Fourth, will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
