THIS WEEK

“Antibiotics: Friend or Foe” is the subject of Friday’s program. Chris Velicer from the UW Medical Center will discuss her research on increased risk of breast cancer with the use of antibiotics. The BBRC returns to its familiar haunts at the Glendale Country Club on Friday, with breakfast served at 7:00 a.m., followed by the weekly meeting and the program. Be prepared to contribute to Tsunami Relief. Rotary International has set up a special account called “Solidarity in South Asia.” If you want to see your contribution go to a Rotary-sponsored group, note that on the memo portion of your check. Make your check payable to the BBRC Foundation.

ADMIN CORNER

It’s our semi-annual check-up of the data you’ve provided to the club’s database. Do you have a new email? A new home or business address? Been a member of another Rotary Club before you joined the BBRC and didn’t tell us about that? (The time spent in that previous club counts toward your “Years in Rotary.”) How about letting us know about your children? Clubmate (our software program) only likes to have DD/MM/YYYY when adding family members to the database. An upgrade is easy. Just go to the Members Only section, put in your ID and Password (ask the computer to remember it for future visits), click on “Online Directory.” This will reveal the club’s directory for individual members. It is your responsibility to keep the information current. You can do so by scrolling down to the “Directory Information Form,” which asks you to fill in information that you wish upgraded. Remember to click on the “Submit” button when you’re finished and DON’T USE the ENTER key while moving around the form.

Thanks for helping us keep tabs on you. We only sell this information to various online health and financial firms WHOA! JUST KIDDING!

Alex Rule: Reclassification Talk ... and Talk ... and Talk

RuleWith projector in hand, Alex Rule gave an interesting re-classification talk on the subject of his transferring from one company to another. Alex — for our new members — gained much notoriety when he gave his first classification talk back about nine years ago. He lost track of time and no amount of signals or audience cat-calls could dissuade him from going over the limit. For this, he earned the reputation as a vociferous talker.

Friday, members were flabbergasted to see that Alex not only stayed within the time limit, but gave a very structured and fact-filled talk. He told his audience that he’s had a “life well lived,” but it’s nothing compared to his marriage to Kim and the arrival of their first offspring, little Liam. “My former company did some re-structuring, which left me without a position. This happened a year ago and coincided with Liam’s birth. Just before my benefits ran out six months later, I took a new position with Bratrud Middleton Insurance in Tacoma.”

Now, Alex works with brokers to buil their employee benefit programs. Noting that Health Care accounts for 14% of our nation’s GNP, health care has to be one of the number one issues for us all. Alex exhorted his audience to abate the rate of obesity ... ”go for a walk once in awhile.”

His new job has him working with Human Resource people in support and education. His duties include employee/claimant advocacy and education, carrier placement and negotiation, cost control and plan design creativity, and strategic employee benefit plan consulting.

He noted that corporate support by many Washington corporations stresses employee health programs. Alex would like to see our Fellowship Committee set up a program of exercise in the form of regular walks in the area. [Harkens back to days of yore when a determined group of Rotarians met weekly (or was it weakly?) for a brisk morning walk along the Sammamish River. Maybe the after-walk breakfast at Bud’s Cafe in Redmond undid all the good ... but it’s worth a try!]

Thanks Alex for your re-classification talk.
