Economic Development Program Helps Communities

VerchotHomeJane Kuechle introduced the featured speaker, Michael Verchot, Director of the University of Washington Business School’s Business & Economic Development Program. The program assists small business owners in economically distressed communities while providing students with an enhanced learning experience.

Michael pointed out several changing demographic patterns. In the state of Washington between 1990 and 2000, non-white populations have increased an average of 63% while the white population has increased 14.6%. In Bellevue, the white population has increased 3.6% while the African-American population has increased 12% and the Hispanic population has increased 166%. He pointed out that these changes mean significant changes in customer patterns which require possible changes in the way that manufacturers and retailers market their wares and services. It also means significant changes for employers, as they are dealing with increasingly non-white populations amongst their employees. Michael pointed out that the non-native English speakers in Bellevue now approximate the number of non-English speakers in Seattle. READ MORE

Notice to All Members: The BBRC Event Hats and Visors are available for sale at this week’s meeting. Price is $10 for hat, $10 for visor. Dean Pollock is handling the delivery of the caps & visors. They will be available for delivery through May 14.

Putting on the other hat (Reveille Editor). I didn’t plan to be absent Friday, which became my first unexcused absence since joining the BBRC. Nobody keeps track of stuff like that, but nobody likes events that change your plans either. I had a couple of nosebleed incidents last week, which required visits to the local emergency room. Hopefully, all will be cleared up with a procedure this week. Thanks for your thoughtfulness and obvious caring. Our Family of Rotary Care and Concerns is working magnificently! Here’s what the card on the beautiful flowers said:

“Dear Johnny, The BBRC Nose you are having some trouble and missed you this morning. Hope you are up to snuff soon! Your friends at the BBRC!!”

How did you people know I use snuff?
