Before there was COVID-19, there was Polio. Ask people of a certain age and they remember well the health service announcements for caution, for avoiding certain social situations like swimming pools in the summer time, and the fear that they could acquire a paralyzing and debilitating disease for which there is no cure.
Today the story is much different. The facts are that over the last 30 years because of the efforts of Rotary International and a world-wide network of partners, over 99.9% of cases have been eliminated. In fact, only three countries remain impacted, and only two of those countries have reported cases in the last several years. If it feels like we're close to eliminating polio worldwide, it's because we are.
Rotary is side by side with our global partners in this initiative through both funding and hands-on field work. At Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club we're proud to co-sponsor this important work for the world's children.
