In this presentation, Lopez Island photographer Peter Cavanagh will take us on a virtual journey to see iconic birds in remote places around the world. During his travels, he has taken images for his new book 100 Flying Birds: Photographing the Mechanics of Flight. He will also discuss the current worrying global trend of decline in bird populations.

About the Speaker

Peter Cavanagh is a Pacific Northwest wildlife photographer and author who has been taking photographs since he was a boy of five growing up in England. After a career in academia as a Professor of Biomechanics at Penn State, the Cleveland Clinic, and the University of Washington (which included almost 20 years of research for NASA) Peter has devoted himself full-time to bird photography. His images have been included three times in the Top 100 Bird Photographs of the Year by the Audubon Society. His book 100 Birds in Flight: Photographing the Mechanics of Flight was published by Firefly Books in November 2021. Peter is a member of the North American Nature Photographers Association. He guest curated the Exhibit How Birds Fly at the Seattle Museum of Flight.
