This is the official call for nominations for the office of District Governor, District 5030, for the Rotary year beginning July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021. The applications should be sent to PDG Bo Darling, fbdarling173@yahoo.com, no later than Thursday, November 16, 2017. It is clear we have many wonderful candidates within our clubs.
Selecting the District Governor is an extremely important process for our District. Yet, many Rotarians do not understand the role of the District Governor; therefore, reciting the duties and qualifications will serve as Rotary training, and might prompt some members to aspire to the office. Current and past club presidents are all eligible to apply.
The Governor’s job is to channel the extraordinary energy, talent, creativity and purpose of over 2,500 Rotarians in this District by leading, building a team, raising money for wonderful causes, and helping clubs be even more successful in the pursuit of worthy goals. As governor, one has a significant budget and the opportunity to work with some of the most dynamic and accomplished people in the business and professional world. It is both a demanding and exceptionally rewarding position of trust.
Principal duties of the District Governor include:
- Serve as the officer of Rotary International in the District.
- Strengthen clubs, organize new clubs, and grow membership.
- Promote positive public image and serve as spokesperson for the District.
- Maintain a safe environment for youth participants.
- Conduct a District conference and other meetings.
- Visit each club.
- Supervise District nominations and elections.
- Prepare budget, provide annual report, and help administer District Designated Funds.
- Work with Governor Elect and other District leaders.
These duties are discussed in more detail in the Manual of Procedure, and in the by-laws of Rotary International, Article 15.090.
Principal qualifications for a District Governor include:
- Membership, other than Honorary, in good standing in a club of this District.
- Membership in a club in good standing with no outstanding indebtedness to Rotary International.
- Service as president of a club for a full year, or as Charter President for at least six months.
- Understanding of the duties of District Governor and a willingness and ability to fulfill such duties.
- At the time of taking office, must have attended the International Assembly for its full duration and have been a member in one or more Rotary clubs for at least seven years.
These basic qualifications are discussed in more detail in the Manual of Procedure, and in the by-laws of Rotary International, Article 15.070 and Article 15.080.
To place a nomination, our club must take the following actions:
- Adopt a resolution of nomination, naming the candidate, at a regular club meeting.
- Send a letter of such nomination, certified by the secretary. That is, the club must vote on the nomination, the secretary must sign a report of such vote.
- Our club may nominate a Rotarian in another club, but there are conditions. Refer to the MOP.
The club will then send the following documents to the Chair of the Nominating Committee:
- The Club Letter of Nomination.
- The completed "Statement of Qualifications of a Candidate for District Governor, 2020-2021”, completed and signed by the club secretary and by the candidate.
- The "Governor Nominee Data Form” (to be completed by nominee and signed by applicant and club secretary)
Each nominee is expected to complete the following and send to the Chair of the Nominating Committee: The "Governor Nominee Data Form” (referenced above), and a brief additional questionnaire "Rotary Resume.”
It is the Club’s responsibility to submit a proper nomination. Potential candidates should ensure that their club follows the proper procedure.
