Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club
Christine Addison &
Celia Morant
President Chuck Kimbrough opened the meeting at 7:30am with his usual cheerful greeting: "Good morning, Bellevue Breakfast Rotarians." Celia Morant gave the following Invocation, a passage from One Can Make a Difference, by Ingrid E. Newkirk:

Compassion is one of the principal things that make our lives meaningful. It is the source of all lasting happiness and joy. And it is the foundation of a good heart, the desire to help others. Through kindness, through affection, through honesty, through truth and justice toward everyone else, we also ensure our own benefit.

Christine Addison introduced visiting Rotarians and guests.

President Chuck
Kimbrough
Chuck reminded us of the meeting at Costco at 9:00am on Saturday, August 21, about District 5030's new database software, DaCdb and asked for volunteers to attend.

Wendi Fischer reminded us about the upcoming BBRC BBQ at the Monger home on Saturday, August 28, starting at 2:00 pm. She asked us to RSVP to her or Chris Monger sooner rather than later. Bring a swimsuit and a side dish. Dick Brown ordered good weather. MORE INFO

Chuck asked us to think about how we could help the people of Pakistan as a Club. The flooding has severely impacted more than 20 million people.

Acting Sergeant At Arms
Paul Chapman, filling in for the absent Elena Howell, asked each table to choose a representative and send him/her to the front of the room.

Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club
Paul then asked Jim Zidar to guess the university from which each of the eight representatives graduated. If Jim guessed correctly, the people at the representative's table would not have to put $1 on the table. If Jim guessed incorrectly, the people at the table would have to cough up a buck.

Unfortunately for Paul, Jim was on a hot streak and guessed wrong only once. SAA intake: about $7. Hooray for Jim!

FRIDAY's PROGRAM
"Rotary In Action—Changing the World for People With Disabilities in Nepal!" Rob Rose, Bellevue Rotary Club
Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club
Rob Rose

Bob Holert introduced our speaker, Rob Rose, a Rotarian in the Bellevue Rotary Club for the past 24 years and originally a Rotary Exchange student in Calcutta, India, in 1974, at the age of 16. Rob has coordinated ten Rotary Foundation matching grants in both Nepal and India and has traveled to Nepal 11 times. He was awarded the Service Above Self award by Rotary International in 2007 and was honored to receive the award of District 5030 Rotarian of the Year from District Governor Jesse Tam at the 2009 district conference in Victoria, B.C. He has been Bellevue Rotary Club's Rotarian of the Year twice. Rob has been a program speaker at many Rotary clubs in the US, India and Nepal and was a featured speaker at Rotary International's 100th Anniversary convention in 2005.

Rob spoke about the Disability Awareness Campaign that he organized in Nepal to help change the perception of people with disabilities. In Nepal, people with disabilities are considered "damaged goods" who committed sins in their past lives and are shunned by society. Many people go to Nepal to conquer Mt. Everest. Rob goes to Nepal to conquer the mountain of discrimination.

Nepal is a country of 29.5 million people. Per capita annual income is only $470 and one-third of Nepalis live below the poverty line.

Bob Holert
Rob has received a lot of support from Rotary for his project. He received a $330,000 Rotary Foundation 3H grant (3H = Health, Hunger and Humanities) and 20 Club-to-Club Rotary projects are being sponsored and funded. Project sponsors include J. Walter Thompson; Save the Children; Hebert Research; Welfare Society for the Hearing Impaired; Handicap International and The Rose International Fund for Children.

During the first phase of the Disability Awareness Campaign, the motto "We are all able" was adopted. Rajesh Hamal, Nepal's most famous movie star, agreed to be a campaign spokesman and did many TV and radio spots. During the second phase of the campaign, billboards were created, street theatre was used to spread the word and 1.2 million copies of a comic strip with impact (the comic strip depicted a student with disabilities rising to the top of his class) were distributed.

Rob gave us some examples of Club-to-Club Rotary projects including the Student Bookcase Project, which involves people with disabilities building bookcases for students and Bocce Ball, which helps children with disabilities. Rob stressed the importance of leveraging the robust Rotary and Rotaract presence in Nepal to help bring about grass-roots change.

Rob mentioned that an 11-day trip to Nepal costs between $2,500 to $3,000 including air fare, hotels, meals and some sightseeing.

Rob is currently looking for more Rotary Clubs to partner with. He also made a strong pitch for the Rotary Foundation. He ended his presentation with, "Namaste: I honor the spirit within you."

An Airline with a Sense of Humor

Kulula is a low-cost South African airline that doesn't take itself too seriously. Check out their new livery and some of their crew's announcement comments.

• • •

Kulula airline attendants make an effort to make the in-flight "safety lecture" and announcements a bit more entertaining. Here are a couple of real examples that have been heard or reported:

On a Kulula flight (there is no assigned seating, you just sit where you want), passengers were apparently having a hard time choosing, when a flight attendant announced, "People, people, we're not picking out furniture here, find a seat and get in it!"

On another flight with a very "senior" flight attendant crew, the pilot said, "Ladies and gentlemen, we've reached cruising altitude and will be turning down the cabin lights. This is for your comfort and to enhance the appearance of your flight attendants.
