THE FRIDAY PROGRAM: BBRC Anniversary Dinner Party | Thanksgiving Baskets Update | Giving Tree Status | Holiday Breakfast | Ethiopia Documentary | Web Fun The Program: It was a Night on the Town for BBRC members and their significant others as we celebrated our 21st anniversary at the new Westin in Bellevue. Tuxes and suits, sequins and silk, everyone looked especially nice. Members and guests mingled in the foyer and enjoyed cocktails and appetizers before dinner started. Peter Stadelman had the Giving Trees decorated with ornaments, and members gathered to around to select a tag (or two or three) to help bring holiday cheer to people less fortunate. The doors opened for dinner and everyone took a seat; beautiful floral centerpieces added color to each table. Bob Bowen started our dinner with an invocation and led the group in the Lord’s Prayer. The pace started to pick up as our emcee, Tim Leahy, came to the podium to talk about some of the projects the BBRC has worked on. John Martinka, our party planner, had to give Tim a little reminder that we are not auctioning off the projects, but rather informing people of just some of the things we have done as a club. As a member, it is always nice to hear about our projects, but we also like to have the opportunity, at least once a year, to share with our spouses and friends some of the things we are doing. With great enthusiasm, Norm Johnson told us that fundraising for the BBRC Spray and Play Water Park just reached $500,000! Norm invited Colly Radford up to share the three checks that pushed us over the $500,000 mark: Puget Sound Bank for $500, Columbia Bank for $500, and Crossroads Shopping Mall for $10,000. John Martinka presented a PowerPoint slide show that gave everyone a glimpse into the BBRC: hands-on projects here and abroad, skits and songs, and our members' choice of attire (Sayoko in leather). Just your average look at the BBRC. (Just a note, Sayoko looked lovely Friday night in a black satin skirt and black and silver lace top). Ernie Hayden offered a toast to our good friend John Mix — “Cheers!” — and after a very nice dinner, we finished off the evening with an elegant, and tasty, dessert and continued our fellowship. Thank you to everyone who attended and everyone who worked to make this a successful event, especially John Martinka, the event planner.
Thanksgiving Baskets Update BBRC members donated $1,820. We bought 190 turkeys with about $1,000 of that money, with some inside deals put together by Steve Roberts. The balance of the $800 will be used to fill the baskets with other food. The Giving Tree Status Generous Rotarians signed up for 79 of the 120 gift ornaments. That 66%! Unfortunately, five tags were taken but no signature was left on the sheet, so we don't know who took them. If you have numbers 5, 22, 78, 80 or 114, please . The rest of the gift ornaments will be at the meeting on December 1st for those who still would like to participate. Remember: All gifts should be brought to Peter Stadelman at the BBRC meetings by December 8th (not to Hopelink or the YMCA). As a reminder: gifts #1-79 are unwrapped; gifts #80-120 are to be festively giftwrapped. Thanks again for your generosity and help in making The Giving Tree Program a success! Ethiopia Documentary [KIRO 7 News personality Penny LeGate and her photographer went to Ethiopia on the same polio vaccination trip I did. They have been there many other times as well. This will be an outstanding documentary that will, I’m sure, highlight the work that Rotary does in that country along with featuring several local Rotarians (including our own Margie Burnett).] From Penny LeGate:
