GSE Team Travel Log From Sayoko
05.08.07
Today is another busy day for us. In the morning, we were divided into two groups and went on vocational visits. At noon, Kelly and Sayoko visited the Yashio Rotary Club, one of the oldest clubs in District 2770. At 2:30pm, all of us were at the Sohka City mayor’s office. We were surprised by the young age of the mayor.
We also met people from the Welfare, Business Development, and Community Service sections. At 4:00pm, we visited one of the area businesses owned by a female Rotarian. She happens to be Lindsey’s
host mom — an amazing lady who took over her husband business at his death and doubled its revenue. At 6:30pm, we all headed back to our host families. Click here to read the full report (PDF).
05.09.07
May 9th was the busiest and longest day in the entire GSE schedule. We met the governor of Saitama prefecture as well as the mayor of Saitama city. The day included a tour of the prefectural government building, assembly hall, police department, and emergency call center. For lunch, we dropped by at the Urawa Kita Rotary Club. After lunch, we enjoyed a tea break at one of the Rotarian’s home. In the evening, we made a presentation at a joint Rotary meeting where six clubs gathered. Then we were transferred to our new host families.

05.12.07
It is hard to keep track of what day it is. Today, we “climbed” Mount Tsukuba and visited Asahi Beer factory. The weather is simply beautiful with blue sky and cool breeze. We assembled in the parking lot of the city government building. Assistant Governor Suzuki gave everyone instructions before we split into five groups. Click here to see the full report (PDF).

ID Theft & What’s New in the Attorney General’s Office," Rob McKenna, Attorney General of Washington
Ernie Hayden introduced Attorney General Rob McKenna, a graduate and strong supporter of Sammamish High, who is a member of the Bellevue Rotary Club. Rob is Washington’s 17th Attorney General. As the state’s chief legal officer, he directs 500 attorneys and nearly 700 professional staff, providing legal services to state agencies, boards and commissions.
General McKenna received his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1988, where he was a member of the Law Review. He earned a B.A. in Economics and a B.A. in International Studies, both with honors, from the University of Washington, where he was student body president.
During his tenure as attorney general, McKenna has been named:
-
National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) Executive Board Member;
-
NAAG Tobacco Committee Co-Chair;
-
One of Washington CEO Magazine’s Most Amazing Attorneys of 2006;
-
One of Seattle Magazine’s 26 Most Influential People in Seattle;
-
Outstanding Leader of the Year by the Eastside Domestic Violence Program; and
-
Aspen Institute Rodel Fellow in Public Leadership.
Rob gave BBRC members a “whirlwind tour of what the AG’s office does and what the major issues and what his sources of pride are in achieving new policy initiatives and legislation. He was quite proud of an 8 for 8 and 1000 batting average in achieving bipartisan support for needed new laws to help law enforcement cope with a changing society and new public safety issues.
Rob wants to:
-
Keep communities safer by leading the state in fighting meth, sexual predators and domestic violence.
He said, “Assault by strangulation is the third leading cause of death in domestic abuse cases.”
-
Protect consumers and businesses from identity theft, fraud and high-tech crimes, such as cyber fraud, phishing and spyware. Rob advised, “Identity theft takes your information to use your credit.” He recommended putting a freeze on our credit if at any feel we think we should. Rob noted that meth is linked to ID Theft. He recommended owning a shredder, have a mail box that is keyed, and acting quickly to stop credit when you lose your computer, flash drive, wallet, purse. “ID Theft starts when you lose control of your personal information.”
Rob convened the first Statewide Identity Theft Conference and formed working groups to fight this crime. He says he will continue working to pass legislation allowing citizens to freeze access to their credit before they become victims of ID theft. In response to the rising victimization of Latino consumers, AG McKenna convened two Latino Consumer Protection Summits in SeaTac and Yakima to identify new ways to reach this community and improve access to CP tools. Under AG McKenna’s leadership, the Office of the Attorney General was the first state agency to implement a performance management plan that rewards high-performing employees who achieve rigorous goals.
As part of his Operation: Allied Against Meth program, a major achievement was the passage of a comprehensive new statewide methamphetamine initiative and formation of the Pacific Northwest Precursor Chemical Committee. Rob has presented the Operation: Allied Against Meth school assembly to more than 20,000 students at schools across Washington.
A key priority for the Attorney General’s Office is to safeguard consumers from fraud and unfair business practices by:
-
Enforcing consumer protection and antitrust laws, recovering refunds for consumers and imposing penalties and injunctions on offending businesses.
-
Educating the public on issues such as identity theft and scams that target seniors, minorities and vulnerable populations.
-
Mediating complaints between consumers and businesses at no cost to either party. On average, two out of three complaints filed with our office are satisfactorily resolved.
-
Administering Washington's Lemon Law for new motor vehicle warranty enforcement, including arbitration, education, and manufacturer and dealer enforcement.
-
Representing consumers who would not otherwise have an effective voice in cases regarding utility company rates and operations.
A reservoir of information.
Rob discussed How to Stop Telemarketing Calls. He explained that, consumers who wish to decrease the amount of unsolicited telemarketing calls they receive should register with the Federal Trade Commission's National Do Not Call Registry at www.donotcall.gov or by phone 1-888-382-1222.
Telephone marketers and their service providers must honor the requests of consumers who have placed their telephone numbers on the Federal Trade Commission's national Do Not Call (DNC) Registry.
The BBRC needs to invite Rob back again for Part II of his clinic on how to be and stay safe.
Political History:
Rob, has been an attorney for 18 years since beginning his career in 1988 at the Bellevue office of Perkins Coie, one of the nation’s top 50 law firms.
In 1995, McKenna was elected to the Metropolitan King County Council. He was re-elected twice without opposition and was twice rated “Outstanding” by the Municipal League.
A committed community leader, McKenna has raised hundreds of thousands for the Eastside Domestic Violence Program and the Bellevue Schools Foundation. An Eagle Scout himself, McKenna continues to serve as a board member with the Chief Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Bellevue Community College Foundation.
McKenna, his wife Marilyn and their four children reside in Bellevue.
