ns were discussed, including having to wear the beautiful white tu-tus meant to prevent blood clots. Nobody told me about wearing white tu-tus. That's one reason I haven't gone outside since surgery. I have a clean bill of health on the blood clots, but there's swelling in the operative knee, so there's still some concern. "Wear your tu-tu and be strong," was the prescription.

So, tomorrow (Monday, July 25) is the two-week anniversary of my operation. I'm working toward walking independently (without my walker), am anticipating visits by Visiting nurses and physical therapists, and have a prescription in my pocket for more PT once the initial 3-week post-op period ends. I must say that the care from start to finish (or at least, up to now!) has been superb. All of the professional caregivers are wonderful people and bring a positive glow to their surroundings.

Week Two completed and good progress noted. Another two weeks will show major improvement. Don't expect Mix back at Rotary until around the 1st of September. Remember, also, that Doug Cameron goes in for the same operation this week. We could write a book! (Just wait until we get the pictures!)

Thanks to Jim Owens for his ready willingness to transport the patient during this period of high gas prices. His 1995 Jeep Cherokee was in mint condition, immaculate, with 39,000 miles on it. I was impressed.

One final note (this is for Deasy and Mahoney, who are always looking for special connections behind the story): On surgery day, as I was being prepared for what was coming, I was wheeled into pre-op after saying farewell to my wife. This was about 9:00 Monday (7-11) morning. A tall nurse swept in and began some preparations for my accepting the anesthesia. We chatted briefly, establishing that we both had University of Idaho connections! And, then another lovely nurse appears at my bedside, saying, "John, hello, do you remember me? I'm Mary Barton, Sam's daughter."

Wow, another Idaho connection! Things were beginning to swirl around the prep room, and I could think of nothing else that to lead the troop of anesthesiologists in a chorus of "Go Vandals, Go!" That being completed, the surgery began.

I remember nothing further until I awoke back in post-op ... and there was Mary again, making sure I was okay. Her Dad is a longtime family friend and I called him a few days after coming home to tell him what a nice daughter he had! He and his wife are 90-91 year olds enjoying retirement on the shores of Coeur d'Alene Lake.

I'm enjoying this respite and the news that flows in from what the club is doing. The program on 7/15 must have been terrific with all the preparations made for a great video exchange. Then I heard that the Monthly Social at Doo-Vall was a great success, with all kinds of entertainment, including a visit from Cletus and Mary. I heard heaps of praise on the program featuring Justice Tom Chambers of the Washington Supreme Court. Mark Hough covered that one like a floor of Armstrong tile. Jeff Newell's program was memorable as a first-person report on the War in Iraq. And, the Raffle gets its lift-off for another successful trip this Friday. Enjoy these meetings — you don't know what you're missing until they take it away from you!

Thanks, fellow Rotarians, for all your cards, emails and phone calls. And, the beautiful bouquet, which continues to flourish on the dining room table. Bless you all.
