Community Service in the Spotlight
 Tim Moriarty
|
Community Service Director Tim Moriarty gave a brief report of happenings in this important part of Rotary and the BBRC. He first thanked the effort of his committee chairpersons: Tom Smith, Youth Services; Alex Rule, Preserve Planet Earth; and Madeline Gauthier, Community Service.
Smith’s Youth Services Committee is busy determining the recipients of annual scholarships, total $4,000. During the year, the committee has supported RYLA, the Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club, and Lake Heights YMCA.
Preserve Planet Earth, chaired by Alex Rule, again participated in the County’s Sammamish “ReLeaf” project – stream restoration on Sammamish Slough, a project that the BBRC has supported for over six years. In addition to twice-yearly planting parties, the club has provided cash for shrubs and trees.
Madeline Gauthier’s Community Service Committee gave oversight to the Thanksgiving baskets project; gave financial aid to two families as Christmas gifts; will refurbish a home for the BBRC’s “Christmas in May” hands-on project; continued strengthening the Hopelink connection; and gave continued support of Treehouse, with a $3,000 check for a one-on-one academic tutoring program.
