Camp Stand By Me/Easter Seals
Representing the Major Gifts Committee, Mary Bell introduced Sheila Housley, Director of Camp Stand By Me, located in Vaughn Inlet, near Gig Harbor.
Sheila told the Club how her son was suffering from cancer, and she noted that few facilities were available to give families a break and the patient some quality time away from treatment. That’s when Camp Stand By Me teamed up with Easter Seals to expand the camp, providing camping opportunities year round. Children and their families who are suffering from all kinds of illnesses are able to use the camp, which has been operating for over 40 years. Currently, there is a dire need to renovate the center building. This building is located at the entry way to the camp.
Paul Pitkin, Capital Campaign Manager, brought several renderings of some major renovations which would allow them to serve more campers and to build new facilities. Every current building has been renovated and $650,000 raised so far; but $1 million more is needed.
The $25,000 check from the BBRC will go to renovate the center building. This is the payoff for all the hard work raising funds for the BBRC Raffle. Mary said the field trip the team took to look over the camp was a life-affirming experience for each Rotarian
