Report From Eastside Academy
On behalf of the BBRC Foundation, committee member Jeanne Thorsen introduced Greg Stone, Executive Director of the Eastside Academy, recent recipients of a $15,000 major gift from the BBRC.
Stone said the school is “an alternative to the alternative high school. This is the last chance for many kids to finish their high school program. Our goal is to have the kids earn their high school diploma. We have 25 students, a small staff, and 30 volunteers. The kids come mostly from Bellevue and the Eastside. We have 10-11 students per teacher. Most are from single parent families, and many are chemically dependent. Underneath all of this are kids who want to be loved. A small tuition is charged.”

The grant goes to fund education options – an online curriculum. Stone said the students “have holes in their transcripts, courses that we simply can’t offer. This grant will give them the opportunity to go online and study one of 23 different classes to fill these holes.” Stone said the software has been installed and is quickly showing great results. The Academy also is in need of more volunteers. If you care about kids, here’s the place for you. Contact Jeanne Thorsen or Steve Roberts for more information about helping the Eastside Academy.
