Students of the Month: Steven Ross & Helen Wong
Steven Ross

Steven Ross, senior at Eastside Catholic, accepted a plaque designating him a “Student of the Month” by the BBRC. Steven, accompanied by his father and his school principal, was high on Eastside Catholic’s commitment to community service. As presenter Larry May said, “Steven has earned 75 hours of community service at various venues, particularly Children’s Hospital.” Steven is a member of the National Honor Society and a proud member of the school’s football team. “Our football team’s project has been to take projects to the community. For example, right after 9/11, the team made dinner for Bellevue firefighters. Our regular visits to Children’s Hospital have meant a lot to me, and the kids appreciate our coming. Our school is focused on the community. We do great things.”

Bob Holert introduced Helen Wong, a senior at Sammamish High School. Helen holds a 3.96 grade point average, is the Key Club Program Coordinator, an AP scholar, a National Merit scholar, an Academic All-State, a Varsity gymnast, a member of the school’s Knowledge Bowl Team, and the cheer team. Bob wondered when Helen had time to sleep!
In response, Helen proudly told about her role in founding the Odle Junior High mentor project for middle school students. “We have a team of ten students, five girls and five boys, who are mentoring an equal number of Odle Junior High students. Our purpose is to prepare them for their entrance into Senior High School. It’s working very well.”
Helen plans to enroll at Georgetown University in the fall, majoring in international relations. She foresees a Foreign Service career and wants to focus on raising awareness of AIDS and work to combat drug trafficking.
