Kim Shrader
related a first-hand report about the effectiveness of Rotary’s RYLA program. This annual seminar is held over a weekend, usually in March, on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University. Kim’s daughter
Krista “was almost coerced into attending and not very happy with the prospect. But, as a dutiful daughter, she went.” Here is her letter to RYLA Chairperson Alan Bohling.
March 14, 2001
Dear Mr. Bohling:
I recently got back form the Rotary Youth Leadership Conference that was held at PLU. It was such a great experience and I am so
glad I had the opportunity to be a part of it. I enjoyed listening to numerous motivational speakers. It was inspirational and I learned so many things that I will keep with me forever. Some of the
things I learned were about truth, people, kindness, attitude, and life.
I am so thankful that you and the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club sponsored me for RYLA. I really appreciate the thoughtfulness, and
I do believe that it did make a difference in my life. I look forward to using what I have learned and applying it to my life now and in the future.
Thank you so much!
Sincerely, Krista Shrader”
When the RYLA announcement comes next January, this letter will serve as but one example of the impact this program has on the young
people who attend. Kudos to Alan Bohling who has chaired the BBRC’s participation in the program for lo, these many years. And congratulations to Kim and Krista Shrader for teaming up to make the RYLA
experience a truly lasting one.
