She is responsible for the financial and general business operations of the district including finance\, budget\, payroll\, information / technology infrastructure\, building projects\, maintenance\, custodial services\, transportation and nutrition services. Her role involves general oversight for the financial health of the district as well as the general business operational structure which impacts Bellevue’s ability to offer quality educational services. She joined Bellevue School District in 2013. \nHer previous experience included Chief Operations Officer and CFO for the Mesa County Valley School District in Grand Junction\, Colorado. She previously spent 16 years as a Partner at PWC Consulting. Melissa and her husband Jeff have two children.

DESCRIPTION:Kit Bowerman – Doctor\, Verterinary Medicine\nBellevue Breakfast Rotary / Self\nDr. Bowerman will discuss ethics relating to his career in veterinary medicine\, and how it can pertain to our daily lives.\nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Kit received his veterinary degree (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) from Washington State University in 1973.  He practiced in Bellevue\, WA. for 42 years specializing in small animal medicine.  He owned the Cat and Dog Clinic of Bellevue for 32 years before retiring in 2015.  During his career\, Kit was also active in veterinary medical professional associations\, including the Seattle King County VMA (president)\, Washington State Veterinary Medical Association(president)\, and has also received a lifetime achievement award from the American Veterinary Medical Association.\nOutside of his practice\, Dr. Kit was a charter member of Bellevue Overlake Rotary Club for twenty years\, and past president.  He is currently a member of the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club.  After retirement\, he attended the Western College of Auctioneering\, becoming a professional auctioneer. He still enjoys auctioneering when the opportunity occurs.\nKit has been married to Jan for 38 years\, and they have one son\, Adam\, who is 30.

DESCRIPTION:Arzu Forough – President / CEO\nWashington Autism alliance\nWashington Autism Alliance expands access to healthcare\, education and services for people with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities in Washington State. Our impact plan\, which will be discussed today\, includes a brief history of our impact and our aspirations for the next 4 years.   \nAbout the Speaker\nMs. Forough brings over 20 years of experience in training and development to her position\, including leadership development\, government relations and non-profit management. In 2007 she founded Washington Autism Alliance and developed the “Autism IEP supplement: Best Practice Guidelines for educating students with autism”. Her IEP supplement as well as guidelines for training teachers was legally adopted by the Washington State legislature in 2008 and became the requirement for all teachers working with learners with Autism Spectrum Disorders statewide. \nArzu introduced Shayan’s Law\, Autism Insurance Parity to the Washington State legislature\, petitioned the state Health technology Assessment of evidence-based treatment of autism and ignited multiple legal actions that have clarified state and federal laws mandating insurance benefits for those with autism and other developmental disabilities.

SUMMARY:Gender Equality:  Catalyzing Transformative Change and Empowering Hope-Filled Futures for Girls
DESCRIPTION:Margo Day – CEO and Co-Founder\nMekuno Project  www.mekunoproject.org \nMargo Day had worked for over 30 years in the technology industry\, but when she hit her 50th birthday\, she felt as though she needed to do more–she needed to make an impact. The question was how. It wasn’t until she went on a trip to Kenya and met 34 young girls at a rescue center in West Pokot that she realized her calling. She has spent over a decade since working with organizations in Kenya to eliminate female genital mutilation and child marriage\, leaving the technology industry for a higher calling.  Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right\, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful\, prosperous\, and sustainable world. However\, this goal will remain unreachable if forms of gender-based violence\, such as female genital mutilation and child marriage persist\, and girls in Kenya and around the world are prevented from creating hope-filled futures of their own design.  I’ve seen catalytic transformative change that works to successfully address these issues through holistic and comprehensive solutions.  Realized hope for a better future becomes an unstoppable force\nAbout the Speaker\n Margo Day is a life-long change-maker. She was first introduced to coding as a senior in high school and has paved the way for women in technology ever since. Margo had a fulfilling 34-year career in the tech industry\, 17 of which were spent as a senior leader at Microsoft\, including most recently as Vice President of U.S. Education\, where she focused on building up partnerships and breaking down barriers. She has been a steadfast leader and mentor to women and girls throughout her life\, and has devoted much of her energy towards achieving gender equality globally.\n \nMargo has spent the past decade fighting to eliminate child marriage and FGM\, creating a cycle of advocacy and prosperity for women and girls in Kenya by supporting World Vision and Global Give Back Circle projects. As a member of the Board of Directors for Global Give Back Circle\, and a member of the National Leadership Council for World Vision\, Margo’s dedication to transformational change has been instrumental in funding these programs and advocating for their growth so that they can continue to enact positive change for women and girls throughout Kenya.\n \nHaving seen what can be done when resources are applied strategically\, Margo left her position at Microsoft to co-found the Mekuno Project\, a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating the root causes of child marriage and FGM within a generation and empowering girls to thrive in futures they design.\n\nIn her spare time\, Margo remains engaged in technology as a Board of Directors member for two artificial intelligence startup companies: Discourse Analytics and Vaital. She enjoys spending time in the great outdoors\, backpacking\, boating\, cycling\, scuba diving\, skiing\, and playing golf. She also loves adventure travel\, the theater\, and a great glass of Washington wine.
