After graduating from California Maritime Academy in 1988 with a B.S. Degree in Nautical Industrial Technology\, he worked in the industrial marketplace for many years. DESCRIPTION:J. Reiko Callner – Executive Director\nWashington State Commission on Judicial Conduct\nExecutive Director J. Reiko Callner will describe the function of our state’s Judicial Conduct Commission: “internal affairs” for our state judiciary This constitutional\, independent agency is charged with both maintaining ethics in the judicial branch and safeguarding judicial independence.  Ms. Callner will share examples of judges who have been sanctioned\, and why\, and answer questions. \nAbout the Speaker\nMs. Callner has served as the Executive Director of the Washington State Commission on Judicial Conduct since 2005.  She previously served the agency as its senior investigator\, beginning in 1997.  Ms. Callner is an emeritus board member of the national Association of Judicial Disciplinary Counsel\, and is past Chair of the Washington State Human Rights Commission.  Ms. Callner worked as a prosecutor for ten years and has represented Child Protective Services.  She has taught for the American Judicature Society\, the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission\, the Administrative Office of the Courts\, the National Center for State Courts\, and has made presentations to a wide variety of public agencies and private organizations.  She has assisted the US State Department and non-governmental organizations in improving judicial ethics and independence in over 35 foreign countries.\nMs. Callner has an undergraduate degree from Oberlin College and a J.D. from the University of Washington.  She was a law clerk for retired Washington State Supreme Court Justice Robert Utter and is a licensed Zumba instructor.

As the CEO of Rise Above\, Jaci leads the organization in its mission to empower youth through a variety of programs including sports\, education\, financial literacy\, prevention skills and mentorship\, using prevention strategies that will spark change in people’s lives. \nJaci has attracted an incredible group of engaged and like-minded partners and donors across the country who believe in Rise Above’s mission to empower Native youth\, including PNW tribes\, investors\, prevention advocates\, sports legends\, hall-of-famers\, and Hollywood stars. \nJaci has helped grow the Rise Above business from serving 300 kids to over 3\,000 per year growing exponentially each year. Amid building her business\, Jaci was approached by an independent Hollywood Film Producer to write and produce a feature film of her life story. Jaci’s story will be featured in a full-length motion picture with 3-time NBA Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens and award-winning actor Danny Glover serving as Executive Directors to the film. \nIn the past two years\, Jaci has been invited to speak to numerous youth organizations\, girl’s empowerment events\, the U.S. Attorney’s Office Western District of Washington and the youngest organization to speak at the U.S. White House Conference on Hunger\, Nutrition and Health.

Some historians believe that we are experiencing societal division\, the magnitude of which was last seen in the 1840s and 1850s. If this is true\, what can the individual do? His solution was to learn who people are and to share their stories so others may appreciate just how much we all have in common in a book titled Ordinary People\, Extraordinary Lives. This morning he will discuss his journey! Please note this is a Zoom only meeting. \nAbout the Speaker\nGregory Leeson\, B.A.\, PMP\, originally hailing from Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Western Ontario. Following a brief stint in investment banking in Toronto\, he relocated to the United States\, where he ventured into bond futures trading at The Chicago Board of Trade. Several years later\, having self-taught himself various software engineering languages\, he designed systems for prominent companies\, including Sears Roebuck\, Quaker Oats\, and Abbott Laboratories. A brief history of the viaduct\, process to select an alternative\, and what happens between now and the opening of the Aquarium’s Ocean Pavilion in the summer of 2024\, as well as the Waterfront Park\, opening a year from now. park a year from now! \nAbout the Speaker\nIn his day job\, Bob helps manage Ivar’s\, but he has been active in all matters waterfront for almost 40 years.  He helped the Port of Seattle develop its first strategy plan for the Marine Division in the 1980’s\, was on the Community Advisory Panel for Colman Dock in 2006\, was one of the 24 stakeholders appointed by the governor\, county executive and mayor to select a replacement for the Viaduct\, was a part of the group that developed the Tunnel + Transit solution\,\nand sat on the design committees for the seawall and waterfront park. Bob has volunteered at the Aquarium since 2006\, and presently sits on the Central Waterfront Oversight Committee which manages the park.  He also walks the project 5-6 days a week.

DESCRIPTION:Pat Callans – Executive Vice President\, Administration\nCostco \nPat will update us on Costco’s business\, some leadership changes\, as well as the company’s new Issaquah office building\, on the north side of I-90 in Issaquah. \nAbout the Speaker\nPat grew up in Joliet\, Illinois\, and is a proud alumnus of the University of Notre Dame and Northwestern University School of Law. After graduating from law school and passing the Illinois bar exam\, Pat worked as a lawyer at Winston & Strawn in Chicago. \nIn 1989\, following his fiancée (now wife)\, Cathy\, who worked for Boeing\, Pat moved to Seattle\, passed the Washington bar exam\, and joined the law firm Foster Pepper & Shefelman. He worked on several cases in which the law firm represented Costco\, and after the Costco-Price Club merger\, Pat became more involved in handling the expanding company’s litigation. \nIn March 1994\, Pat joined Costco in the position of corporate counsel. Responsible for much of the company’s litigation\, his role as one of the company’s in-house lawyers continued to expand. Pat became assistant general counsel and an officer of the company in January 2000. In September 2000\, Pat left the legal department and joined Costco’s membership/marketing department as VP of executive services.\n In March 2007\, Pat took over responsibility for operations and buying for Costco Home and Costco Business Centers\, as well as the Auburn businesses and the corporate purchasing department. In September 2012\, Pat moved to Costco’s human resources department\, and in September 2013\, he was promoted to SVP of human resources and risk management. In January 2019\, Pat was promoted to EVP of administration. He currently is responsible for various departments\, including human resources\, membership and marketing\, construction and purchasing\, risk management\, flight\, community relations\, privacy operations\, warehouse ops and auditing\, and security and Home Office facilities.\n In addition to his degrees from Notre Dame and Northwestern\, Pat received his executive MBA from Seattle University in 2008. Outside of work\, he is active in the lives of his three kids\, Jonathan\, Matthew and Molly\, and enjoys outdoor activities. He has served on the boards of several local nonprofit organizations and is currently chair of the board of trustees of Seattle University\, while also serving on the board of directors of the Independent Colleges of Washington.

DESCRIPTION:Corey Jahlas – Associate Director of Athletic Bands\nUniversity of Washington This morning BBRC will be joined by 20 members of the UW Husky Marching Band to entertain us\, led by Corey Jahlas. these young men and women will display their musical talent to inspire us as well as make us thankful that we live in a free country for Veterans Day weekend. The remainder of the band will be commemorating Veteran’s Day on the UW campus. \nAre you aware that the only scholarship given by the Husky Marching Band is to their baton twirler? These young men and women commit a tremendous amount of time to follow their passion and appear at both UW events and Husky sporting events. A few historical tidbits about the band are below: \nThe Husky Marching Band enters 2023 in its 94th season. Since 1929\, the world-famous Husky Band has been entertaining audiences from the shores of Lake Washington to Australia\, China\, Ireland\, Japan\, and even Norway. Loyal UW Alumni and other band followers love to sing along to the University of Washington fight song “Bow Down to Washington\,” or “Tequila!” which is known as the Husky Band’s signature song. \nBill Bissell was the third Band Director\, 1970 to 1994. One of the great showmen among college band directors\, Husky crowds watched Bissell’s bands recreate the Mt. St. Helens eruption\, stage horse races\, and wear outrageous costumes. In addition to his duties with the Husky Band\, Bissell was also placed in charge of commencement and served as an administrator for the Alumni Association during his time at the University of Washington. \nSince its inception in 1929\, the Husky Band has gone through many changes\, but still strives for a high degree of musicality\, precision marching\, and the pinnacle of Husky spirit and pride. The current director\, Dr. J. Bradley McDavid\, is the Husky Band’s fourth Head Director. He follows in a long history of true and dedicated Huskies to accept the reins. \nThe Husky Band appeared in the 1996 Disney film “The Sixth Man.” Other special performances include the 1995 and 2002 Wheel of Fortune Collegiate Tournament of Champions and the Key Arena Opening Night\, which included a performance with the Seattle Symphony. The Husky Band has also made appearances on the USS Kittyhawk (1995)\, USS Constellation (1996 and 1999) and the USS Nimitz (2001). \nAbout the Speaker\nCorey Jahlas is currently the Associate Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Washington\, where he is also finishing his doctorate in Wind Conducting. A native of Michigan\, Corey previously attended Central Michigan University for his Bachelors of Music Education and his Master of Music degrees and taught middle school band for several years. Corey is an in-demand music educator\, marching band drill writer\, arranger\, conductor\, and adjudicator. He has designed halftime shows for both high school and college bands across the country\, including Bowling Green State University\, Central Michigan University\, Gettysburg College\, University of New Hampshire\, University of Michigan\, and University of Washington. Corey spends his summers teaching high school Drum Majors in both Washington and Michigan. Corey currently resides in Seattle\, WA where he lives with his cat\, Copland.

Q&A \nThanks to Dr. Doug Cameron for scheduling this speaker. \nAbout the Speaker\nSean P. O’Donnell is a Superior Court Judge for King County\, Washington. Judge O’Donnell is the former President of the Superior Court Judges’ Association\, a statewide organization representing 192 trial court judicial officers across Washington. His current assignment is chief judge for King County’s Unified Family Court.Judge O’Donnell served as a senior deputy prosecutor for 12 years and handled the state’s first human trafficking case and first commercial sexual abuse of a minor case. While a prosecutor\, Judge O’Donnell was a member of the Green River Task Force\, which oversaw the investigation and prosecution of serial murderer Gary L. Ridgway (the ‘Green River Killer’). He has trained lawyers and police nationally and internationally on how to prosecute human trafficking cases. Since joining the bench in 2013\, Judge O’Donnell has been on the court’s family law\, civil and criminal dockets\, including two years as the Court’s Chief Criminal Judge. He has presided over numerous ‘all remote’ jury trials and helped lead efforts to implement the Court’s virtual jury selection and virtual trial procedures and training during the pandemic.Judge O’Donnell helped draft rules currently pending before Washington’s Supreme Court that would authorize trial courts to continue remote trials and jury selection after pandemic emergency orders expire. In 2022\, he helped establish King County’s Protection Order Court pilot project\, which is in its first year of operation. He is keenly interested in A.I. and the possibilities and challenges it presents to the legal profession. He has led three statewide branch task forces in Washington: to improve courthouse security\, to reform Washington’s pre-trial release practices\, and to increase state funding for court interpreters. He is also the legislative co-chair for the Superior Court Judges’ Association.Judge O’Donnell is the 2004 co-recipient of the “Outstanding Lawyer of the Year” from the King County Bar Association and the 2018 recipient of “Judge of the Year” from the American Board of Trial Advocates (Puget Sound Chapter). He is a Trustee for the Lakeside School in Seattle and is a member of the Rainier Scholars Resource Council. He is former chair of the Schools Commission for St. Joseph School.Judge O’Donnell graduated from Georgetown University and Seattle University School of Law. DESCRIPTION:Jerome “Jay” Hagen – Fire Chief\nCity of Bellevue Fire Department \nBellevue is a growing and changing city. A city that was in the past mainly residential is now significantly changed by the number of multi-family units and the tremendous growth of Bellevue’s downtown core. Bellevue Fire seeks to serve the public with innovation responding to emerging needs with empathy and compassion. Chief Hagen will discuss Bellevue Fire’s present and future plans to address these changes. \nAbout the Speaker\nA member of the fire service since 1986\, Chief Hagen joined the Bellevue Fire Department in May of 2018 after an extensive nationwide search. He has assisted Bellevue Fire navigate the challenges of Covid and the rapid growth and development of the city as expressed in the recent addition of Engine 110 for the downtown core.\nChief Hagen began his career as a firefighter in Missoula\, Montana. Shortly thereafter he joined the ranks of the Seattle Fire Department where he rose through the ranks to Assistant Chief of their Operations Division responsible for supervising approximately 1\,000 firefighters. During his thirty-year career as a first-responder he has been assigned to various divisions and has extensive experience with Operations\, Fire Prevention\, Training\, and Administration.\nChief Hagen is a 2002 graduate of the University of Montana where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Communications and Business Management. In March of 2006 he earned a Master of Arts degree in Homeland Security and Defense from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey\, California. In addition\, in 2007 he spent a year in Washington\, D.C. representing the Center for Homeland Defense and Security as a Senior Research Fellow on behalf of state and local first responders. Jay supported the federal grants process at FEMA’s Office of Grants and Training. He has also previously served as Chair of the Interagency Board.\nChief Hagen is civic minded and has been actively involved with Code4NW First Responders Suicide Prevention Hotline\, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Firefighter Stair climb\, the Muscular Dystrophy Association “Fill the Boot” Campaign\, and the Medic One Foundation.\nJay and his wife Theresa live in Newcastle. They enjoy entertaining\, travel\, and spending time with their two adult daughters.

Woodward (Mike) is the author of a series of spy tech thrillers from Penguin Random House. The first\, “The Handler” was released in June ’22. The second\, “Dead Drop”\, was recently released in May ’23.  \nPrior to his writing career\, Mike was an executive with Amazon. There\, he founded\, staffed\, and built a global wholesale Prime / Prime Video content delivery and membership acquisition platform. Starting from scratch with nothing more than a business plan and a single telecom deal\, over the next 4 years the platform grew to encompass 100+ telecom/media partners operating in 40 countries\, acquiring tens of millions of customers. Deals spanned negotiations for distribution/licensing for video\, consumer gaming\, music\, and or shopping. He built and led the team of 100+ BD and marketing professionals spread across 5 international regions. \nMike is also a veteran of US intelligence operations. A 30-year aviation veteran who received her leadership training flying Black Hawk helicopters as a captain in the U.S. Army\, Constance brings a proven track record of safety and operational excellence to the role. With a reputation for valuing people and doing the right thing\, she approaches her work emphasizing safety\, data analysis and continuous improvement in service to our guests and the frontline employee team. Constance most recently served as Alaska’s senior vice president of maintenance and engineering\, where she led all safety\, compliance and operational performance of the airline’s mainline Boeing and Airbus fleet. She previously served as chief operating officer at Alaska Air Group’s regional carrier Horizon Air from 2018 to 2019. Constance joined Alaska Airlines in 2011 and spent her initial years in various maintenance leadership roles\, including as managing director of airframe\, engine and component maintenance. Concurrently\, she oversaw the Virgin America technical operations team\, and was responsible for all aspects of Airbus fleet maintenance.\nBefore joining Alaska\, Constance spent 20 years in aviation maintenance\, including time at Pratt & Whitney Canada\, and as director of airframe maintenance at Air Canada. Constance began her career as an aviation officer in the U.S. Army\, flying helicopters and leading flight operations throughout the world. She holds an FAA Commercial Instrument Helicopter Pilot’s License\, graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt. Most recently\, Constance graduated from the Executive MBA program at the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington.
