DESCRIPTION:Peter Steinbrueck – Commissioner\n\n\n\nPort of Seattle \n\n\n\n\n\nCommissioner Steinbrueck will share  an update on the Port of Seattle and their approach to an equitable economic recovery.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nPeter Steinbrueck is an architect\, small business owner\, community planner and has served as Port of Seattle Commissioner since 2018. Peter’s priorities for the Port include economic development\, family wage jobs\, climate protection\, the environment\, and racial justice and equity. \n\n\n\nPeter’s accomplishments include establishing the $10 million South King County Community Fund\, which addresses environmentally impacted communities near SEA airport and to provides economic resources\, green jobs for youth\, and opportunities to historically underserved people in South King County. \n\n\n\nFollowing the George Floyd killing by police in 2020\, Peter called for an immediate ban on the use of choke holds by Port Police and established the first ever Commission Task Force on Policing and Civil Rights. As a result\, the Port conducted a comprehensive review of policing practices\, establishing best practice reforms for de-escalation and the protection of civil rights. \n\n\n\nAs Commission President in 2020\, Peter led the Port’s initial response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Peter shaped the Equitable Economic Recovery Strategy with a focus on protecting family wage jobs\, internships\, workforce training\, pipelines to employment for underserved youth\, and increasing contracting and procurement opportunities for women and minority-owned businesses. \n\n\n\nAs co-chair of the Port’s Sustainability\, Energy\, and Climate Committee\, Peter’s top priorities are transitioning Port facilities and vehicles to cleaner\, more sustainable energies\, climate resiliency\, habitat restoration\, and tree stewardship. \n\n\n\nFrom 1997 to 2007\, Peter served as City of Seattle councilmember where he led major legislative efforts\, innovative policies and programs including addressing climate change and environmental protection\, alternative transportation and urban mobility\, workforce development\, youth programs\, public safety\, policing\, and civil rights protections. \n\n\n\nPeter volunteers?extensively and has served on the boards and advisory councils of many national and local organizations\, including: \n\n\n\nPike Place Market FoundationWashington Environmental CouncilUnited Indians of All Tribes Labateyah Youth HomeNational Alliance to End HomelessnessSeattle Library Foundation?Feet FirstReal Change Newspaper (homeless/low-income advocacy)Forterra Green Seattle Partnership\n\n\n\nIn 2019\, Peter was a “green horn” crew on his brother’s gillnetter\, the Majestic. DESCRIPTION:Hilary Franz – Commissioner of Public Lands\n\n\n\nWashington State Department of Natural Resources \n\n\n\n\n\nCommissioner Franz will share what the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is doing to protect our forest and other natural resources for the future! \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nElected in 2016\, Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz protects and manages nearly six million acres of public lands in Washington State – from coastal waters and aquatic reserves\, to working forests and farms\, to commercial developments and recreation areas. Commissioner Franz is committed to ensuring our public lands are healthy and productive\, both today and for future generations. \n\n\n\nShe is leading the push to make Washington’s lands resilient in the face of climate change\, investing in carbon sequestration and clean energy with wind\, solar\, and geothermal infrastructure. \n\n\n\nAs the leader of our state’s largest wildfire fighting force\, she has pushed for new strategies\, innovations\, and resources to protect our communities. \n\n\n\nIn order to restore wildfire resilience in our forests\, Commissioner Franz developed a 20-year Forest Health Strategic Plan. This plan will make more than one million acres of forest healthier and more resistant to wildfires – a scale and pace that is unprecedented. \n\n\n\nAnd she has prioritized investments in our rural communities\, allocating millions of dollars to spark economic opportunities in struggling communities. She knows that our working lands – and the communities that depend on them for family-wage jobs – are integral to our success as a state\, and she is investing in their success. \n\n\n\nHilary is a third-generation farmer and small forest landowner\, and has raised three wonderful boys. \n\n\n\nShe holds a bachelor’s degree from Smith College and a juris doctor from Northeastern University Law School.
