DESCRIPTION:Susan Pappalardo – Co-Founder and President \n SPLASHForward\nIt has been just over fifty years since the last new public pool was built on the Eastside and our population has grown tremendously and is much more diverse. Learn about the nonprofit SPLASHForward’s efforts to bring a game-changing new Bellevue Aquatic Center to the City of Bellevue to meet our aquatic needs and provide aquatic pathways so that everyone can learn essential life skills and be safe around water. SPLASHForward is the private partner to the City of Bellevue bringing stakeholder voices to the process\, creating community engagement\, developing long lasting partnerships\, leading the vision for the facility design and usage\, and providing the private funding to a 130\,000 square foot aquatic facility that will be an economic driver to our local economy. In support of their mission\, they have several initiatives including a HS Lifeguard Training Program that has supported 76 students to date. SPLASHForward envisions a world where everyone is safe around water and has equitable access to best-in-class aquatic centers that are vibrant places of pride and inclusive for all. Their mission is to build healthier\, stronger\, and safer communities by creating equitable access to aquatic facilities and programs that build essential life skills\, inclusion\, connection\, and active lifestyles. \nAbout the Speaker\nSusan is the co-founder and president of the nonprofit SPLASHForward founded in 2018 when the city of Bellevue reawakened their efforts to explore a new comprehensive regional public aquatic center. Susan has 15 years of program management leadership and user interface design experience in computer graphics and mobile software design. She worked at Microsoft for 11 years and has been a Kirkland resident for 30 years where she and husband raised twins that just entered college. Susan is a lifelong learner and athlete. A competitive runner\, a former long standing volunteer track and cross-county coach for Cascade Striders\, and a masters and open water swimmer. She is never far from a pool and has met many outstanding people of all ages and abilities through swimming. She co-chairs of the Kirkland Arts Center Advisory Council\, serves on the Advisory Committee for the King County Aquatic Facilities and Parks and Open Space Grant Programs and serves on the City of Kirkland’s Parks Funding Exploratory Committee for a potential 2023 Parks Measure.

Melissa is responsible for the financial and general business operations of the district including finance\, budget\, payroll\, information/ technology infrastructure\, building projects\, maintenance\, custodial services\, transportation\, and nutrition services.  Her role involves general oversight for the financial health of the district as well as the general business operational structure which impacts Bellevue’s ability to offer quality educational services.\nPrior to Bellevue\, Melissa was the Chief Operations Officer and Chief Financial Officer for the Mesa County Valley School District in Grand Junction\, CO.  Her career in education follows a 16-year career as a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting—leading global resource planning and management projects for Fortune 50 clients such as McDonald’s\, Eli Lilly\, Caterpillar\, Abbot Laboratories\, and Proctor and Gamble.  Melissa has a BA in Industrial Administration from Kettering University and a MBA from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.  Melissa joined the district in 2013.\nMelissa and her husband Jeff are parents to Gabriella and Nico.  An active mom\, Melissa spends her spare time traveling with her family\, cooking and juggling the wide range of duties of an active hockey and dance mom.

Backtracking from the gripping prologue\, Dean Adams describes how he came to be a crew member on the Grant and weaves a tale of adventure that reads like a novel?with drama\, conflict\, and resonant portrayals of halibut fishing\, his ragtag shipmates\, maritime Alaska\, and the ambiguities of family life. \nThis morning Dean will tell you the rest of the story! And you may want to buy his book. \nAbout the Speaker\nDean Adams was born in Seattle and grew up on the shores of Lake Meridian near Kent\, Washington. In 1972\, he began his commercial fishing career at the age of 15\, working on his uncle’s schooner\, the GRANT\, and went on to become the owner and captain of the QUEST in 1979 at 22. In the 1990’s\, Dean returned to the University of Washington to finish a B.S. in Fisheries Science (1994) and completed his M.S. in 1998. He retired from Alaska commercial fishing in 2007.
