NEXT WEEK

"Creating An Extraordinary Vision for Medicine in the Pacific Northwest," Tim Morris, Chief Operating Officer, Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, the story of a start-up, non-profit medical university in Eastern Washington, based in Yakima. What started around a table as solutions to addressing a critical need for more healthcare professionals grew into a world changing vision. Pacific Northwest Universtiy of Health Sciences has recently accepted its second class of medical students who, upon graduation, will serve the Pacific Northwest area. [Holert]

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve. ~ Albert Schweitzer

Steve Peters & Steve Waltar

President Margie called the meeting to order and turned over the duties to two of the BBRC's many Steves. Steve Waltar provided the Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance, while Steve Peters introduced visiting Rotarians and guests.

Steve Peters thought he could get away with changing the "You are all always welcome at the BBRC," but careful listeners in the audience held his feet to the fire.

Student of the Month: Yong Min Jon

Student of the Month Yong Min Jon & Larry May

Larry May introduced the October Student of the Month, Yong Min Jon, from Bellevue Christian. Yong was accompanied by his father Song Hi Jon and Bellevue Christian Principal Sue Hemmeling and Guidance Counselor Stephanie Hoffman.

Yong recounted his extreme student discipline life in South Korea and explained his aspiration to become a Chemical Engineer and use that education to help North Koreans. Yong has over 300 volunteer hours and is on the soccer team. With his discipline he is sure to attain his goals!

Adoption Party Video & Late Breaking News

John Marsh, Paulette Caswell and Laurie Mayer

President Margie showed a very professionally done video of the Adoption Party and when that was finished, she introduced John Marsh, Paulette Caswell and Laurie Mayer of the Department of Social and Health Services. Laurie announced that several of the children who attended the party, including Devion, Jesse, Christopher, Lee, Sage and Sierra, were likely to be adopted. President Margie Burnett & Mark Gardner

President Margie thanked Mark Gardner for such a great job on the video. Mark put in more than 20 hours editing and getting follow-up interviews for this project. It will be a great tool for the BBRC to use, as we expand the adoption party idea to other Rotary clubs throughout the state and neighboring states. The video will soon be posted on YouTube.

President Margie has put 210% effort into this exceptionally worthy activity, and Ernie Hayden asked the club to recognize that fact, which the members did with a standing ovation, richly deserved. It turns out the other Rotary Clubs have heard about this project and are interested in hosting their own Adoption Parties.

Wine Tasting Another Great Fellowship Event

Reveille Image
Steve & Suzy Waltar

A good time was had by all at the Wine Tasting event coordinated by the Fellowship Committee and held at the home of Paul and Shannon Chapman. Almost 40 people showed up to sample 20 Washington red wines. There was a lot of very serious swilling, sniffing, tasting and note-taking going on, as the guests each rated these wines.

Congratulations to Steve and Suzy Waltar who brought the top rated wine of the evening — a 1999 Woodward Canyon Merlot! For their efforts, the Waltars won a pair of club level tickets to see the Seattle Seahawks battle the Arizona Cardinals ($600+ value). Thanks to Steve and Terri Lingenbrink for providing this wonderful prize.

Honorable mention goes to Jim and Marcia Gordon and to the Lingenbrinks for bringing the other two top rated wines, a 2005 Cougar Crest Estate Grown Merlot and a 2005 Whitman Cellars Narcissa Red.

President Margie thanked the Fellowship Committee "for putting together just the right combination for a fun, unique party. A special thanks to Shannon and Paul Chapman for hosting us at their beautiful home, which is perfect for entertaining.  I hope we behaved ourselves enough to be invited back again sometime."

Friday Program

District Governor Nancy Keenholts-Dalton — NOT!

Reveille Image
Jim Zidar

Jimmy Zidar, in a fake that the Seahawks would envy, was set to introduce the District Governor, but instead introduced another of the BBRC's Steves — Steve Lingenbrink, who proudly showed off a 19 minute video of the Computers for the World Program's recent trip to Antigua. (The District Governor came down sick and had to cancel at the last moment. She missed hearing about two great projects, the Adoption Party and the Antigua trip.)

The video was designed so that it could be separated into six different segments, depending on the target audience. The BBRC was able to watch the entire video, which was exceptionally well done. If you don't remember, the BBRC, along with the Rotary Club of Antigua, sponsored that trip to Antigua by Jeff Mason and students from Newport High School to provide and install a computer lab in a school in Antigua.

Steve Lingenbrink

This is the latest in a series of similar installations in other parts of the world. Along on this trip were BBRCers John Martinka, Steve Lingenbrink, and Morris Kremen. A container of computers and ancillary equipment was collected, refurbished, and shipped to Antigua, where the students built a computer lab for the school. Funds collected are virtually tripled by matching grants from the District and Rotary International.

This trip included two additional projects: distribution of dictionaries to third grade students and a gift of several sewing machines and instruction on how to use them, to help local women learn skills to help them support their families.

If you missed the meeting, you can view the video below. There is also a shorter, 5‑minute video available for viewing here.

All in all, the wonderful results from the Adoption Party and the Antigua project were great reminders of the power and the personal satisfaction of worthy programs — and one more reason why this is the Best Darn Rotary Club in the World!
