Retreat Survey Conducted
The Retreat Planning Committee, led by Cletis, Chuck Kimbrough, and John Martinka, surveyed the meeting’s attendees regarding their preference for future locations for the Club’s Retreat.

The Retreat is the time Club members and leadership come together to reflect on and recommit to our club’s priority goals and local community and world community service initiatives and projects, while evaluating the initiative and goals we approved and implemented at the beginning of the current Rotary Action Year.

This year’s BBRC retreat will be held on March 19th at the Inn at Port Hadlock.

District 5030 Conference, May 14-16
Members are encouraged to attend the Rotary 5030 District Conference, to be held at the Portland Hilton on May 14-16. The BBRC is offering a generous subsidy of $100 towards the conference registration fee to the first eight members who register and who have never previously attended a District Conference.

The Conference is an opportunity to meet new friends and explore the heart of Portland’s downtown, steps from the streetcar, fabulous dining, famous Pinots, the Rose Garden, and the Japanese Gardens. Shopping at Nordstrom and Powell’s Books are just a few attractions. Portland is only a 3-hour drive or a simple motor coach ride.

Or, make the motorcycle ride with Road Captain Steve Lingenbrink on the First Annual Governor’s Run to the District Conference. (Leaves Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 1:00 PM.)

Register online here.

Valentine Dine-Around
0202moloney
Bob Moloney encouraged fellow Rotarians, especially newer members, to join other Rotary friends for a wonderful home cooked dinner and party on February 13th at the home of a welcoming Rotarian. He said we have plenty of hosts signed up so far and what we now need is to hear from those who wish to come as guests.

This has been an annual event for over 15 years at the BBRC and is one of our favorites. If you decide to come as a guest, a few days before February 13, your host will contact you and ask you to contribute a side dish, a salad, some appetizers, a dessert, or perhaps a bottle of wine. The host will supply the main dish and the cocktails.

This is a super way to meet some more Rotarians and have a great evening at the same time. Please don't miss this opportunity. Sign up online by February 6, or call Bob Moloney (Ph 425-746-9988) if you need more details.

BBRC Fellowship: Barbecue Throw Down
Sayoko Kuwahara
On the cold, rainy evening of Saturday, the 30th of January, 20 BBRCers and their guests (with very sophisticated palates for barbecue ribs) gathered at the home of Mr. Dion Bottoms, Chris Ballard's long-time friend. According to Steve Lingenbrink, it was an "awesome mix of longtime members and newbies."

0202bbq
Dion had 4-5 grills on his deck and back yard. Chris Ballard, however, said that he was even crazier and had more grills on his deck! [I got the impression that these guys think and talk as though the grills were muscular extensions of their bodies.]

After guests arrived, Dion pulled out two HUGE blackened hunks of meat from one of the grills. They had been barbecued for 16 hours at that point. These turned into delicious pulled pork sandwiches, with homemade southern-style barbecue sauce. The rib competition was well organized and orderly, thanks to Chris B.

Competitors:
  1. Dr. Koshar & Dr. Rasmussen—sweet, tangy glazed
  2. Chris Ballard—dry-rubbed, extremely tender
  3. Dion Bottoms—dry-rubbed, spicy hot
The first ribs were served on red napkins, the second on green, and the third on white. Voting was conducted using poker chips — red, green and white. The winner was Team Drs. Koshar and Rasmussen!

All the guests (and their stomachs) thank the barbecue masters, Dion, Chris B., Jonathan and Chris R.! Special thanks go to Dion for opening his home for this memorable social event. We also appreciate the time Desirae Ballard put into the shopping and preparation. Last, but not least, we'd like to thank Steve Lingenbrink and the Fellowship Committee for putting together the event.

FRIDAY's PROGRAM
"The Evolution of the Cruise Industry," Dave Stockert, Holland America Lines
0202speaker1
Wayne McCaulley introduced Dave Stockert Director of Sales for Holland America, who spoke about the evolution of the growing cruise industry. Dave has been involved with the cruise industry for the past 25 years.

With 136 years of experience, Holland America’s founding company, Netherlands-America Steamship Company, transported immigrants to the USA from Holland. It is now recognized as a major leader in the vacation cruise industry, with a fleet of 15 ships. The cruise lines offers nearly 500 cruises to 320 ports of call, in more than 100 countries, territories, or dependencies. Itineraries ranging from 2 to 114 days visit all seven continents, including Antarctica, South America, Australia/New Zealand and Asia voyages; a Grand World Voyage; and popular sailings to ports in the Caribbean, Alaska, Mexico, Canada/New England, Europe and the Panama Canal. Dave described HAL’s ships as “floating resorts.”

Holland America, which is part of the Carnival Corporation that includes Princess Cruises, Costa, Roual Caribbean, Celebrity, Windstar (sailing), and Cunard, uses mid-sized cruise ships that are new or have been modernized. The Seattle-based company uses local food, features 44 Northwest wines, and provides travel guides, party planners, and many educational opportunities, including the latest technology training.

0202speaker2
Dave identified social responsibility and “giving back to our community” as being important to the culture of Holland America, who provided 500 volunteers this past year to Northwest Harvest.

As part of its social responsibility initiative, the cruise line contributes over a million dollars each year in cash, in-kind shipboard events, and useable goods to a broad range of charitable organizations locally and internationally. HAL provides over 2,000 reduced-fare cruises annually to support charitable fundraising events throughout the United States and Canada. The innovative On Deck for the Cure program has raised more than $1.5 million in donations to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Social responsibility also includes “protecting the environment,” and Stockert noted that HAL’s environmental protection includes the Zenon Water Quality System, the ships’ paint, recycling, scrubbers for the diesel emissions, plug-in power when in port, and technology designed to avoid striking whales.

Kelly's Restaurant

A group of 45-year-old guys discuss where they should meet for dinner. Finally, they agree to meet at Kelly's Restaurant because the waitresses have low-cut blouses and nice breasts.

10 years later, at age 55, the group agrees to meet at Kelly's because the food is good and the wine selection is excellent.

10 years later, at age 65, the group agrees to meet at Kelly's because they can eat there in peace and quiet and the restaurant is smoke free.

10 years later, at age 75, the group agrees to meet at Kelly's because the restaurant is wheel chair accessible and they have an elevator.

10 years later, at age 85, the group agrees to meet at Kelly's because they have never been there before.
