Bob Holert introduced our BBRC’s own Steve Waltar. Steve’s topic was “Conditioning and Philanthropy: Climbing Mount Rainier while Supporting Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research”.
Rick Holly from Plum Creek gave us a summary of the companies’ investment and growth in the Wood Products Industry. Contrary to popular belief, the number of trees in the US has actually increased by 50% since the 50′s.
Corey Johnson, the Executive Director of Imagine Scholar, a non-profit organization in South Africa, described how to take children who are in a chronically under-performing educational system in the third World, and provide a program to help develop future leaders for Africa.

Today’s program was presented by Roger Allington, and related to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The basic ANCSA provisions were that Natives retain ownership to 44 million acres of land. Natives were compensated with 962.5 million dollars for title to the remainder of Alaska.
Attorney General Rob McKenna spoke to us about the serious challenges he sees for the state of Washington and his proposals to fix them if he is elected governor.
Steve Lingenbrink discussed his first time at a BBRC meeting in January of 1992 at the Bellevue Athletic Club. The presentation that day was by Phil Smart, Sr. who talked about the eight hours we all have when we are not sleeping or working. After the meeting, Steve talked to Mr. Smart, who told him to join Rotary and give it a while. Steve joined Rotary and, as a result, ended up doing good works in medical and dental clinics in several countries.
Gary Pollock, the Executive Director of the Northwest Center Foundation, spoke about the Foundation’s purpose and goals, which are primarily aimed towards developmentally challenged children and adults.
